About the Author
Dr. Paul A. Craig, a longtime pilot, flight instructor, aviation educator, and author, designed and conducted the extensive pilot study that uncovered the Killing Zone. Driven by a lifelong concern with the high accident rate among general aviation pilots, Dr. Craig has conducted research projects for universities, the FAA, and NASA that has targeted the problem. Since 2002, he has worked as the principal investigator for NASA projects investigating scenario-based flight training, competency-based flight training, Technically Advanced Aircraft, ADS-B implementation, and teamwork among aviation disciplines. Dr. Craig is an Airline Transport Pilot and Gold Seal Flight Instructor for multiengine, instrument, and seaplane. He has twice been named an FAA District Flight Instructor of the Year. Dr. Craig won the NASA “Turning Goals into Reality†award in 2005 and the Wheatley Award as the nation’s most outstanding aviation educator in 2004. He is a frequent speaker to flight instructors and others on improving flight training and safety. As a non-pilot, I purchased this at a request from my student pilot son, and got hooked while reading the first chapter.It's full of statistics and perspectives as the author examines the reasons why newbie pilots with fewer than 1000 hours of flight time are more likely to crash. Each category of crash has its own chapter with helpful advice from a seasoned flight instructor.Most chapters have a few case histories that demonstrate the kind of conditions and decisions that can combine to result in crashes. Along the way he discusses in a most accessible fashion some airplane-unique problems, such as water in fuel tanks, flying in instrument meteorological conditions, night flying, and how to deal with failed instruments and engines. I learned why steeply banked turns are so dangerous, why carburetor icing is a common problem, and some techniques to use when landing in crosswinds.The second edition includes data from 2000 to 2011, adding to the original edition's data from 1983 to 1999. It will be time for a new edition soon.
I read that book while waiting for my approval as a foreign student pilot. The ppl instruction facility had a developed redbird fmx flight simulator and the instructor offered a ride before I signed for the course. He uploaded a simple approach scenario and asked me to land the plane. I tried my best while he was pointing the instruments and throttle. I played ms flight sim decades ago and forgot many things. I landed the plane but missed the runway. During the descent I was thinking " this is wrong, I will miss the runway, I have to abort and try again" but there was some other candidate waiting to play with the thing, and I pressed on. After I read that book, I understand again, that, if you are the pilot in command,you have to carry the responsibility of the decisions. You can't let any stress alter doing the right thing to do.
As a very new student pilot, just at the front edge of the Zone, I can't describe how valuable I found this book. I marked sections on nearly every page which I continue to pour over... and have counseled with my CFI on much of it. The perspective this book provides on managing risk and remaining humble and teachable throughout one's development as a pilot is priceless. I wish I could sit with the author and pick his brain for several hours -
This book is just a collection of NTSB reports with some paragraphs in between. The problem is that the author has multiple grammatical errors and typos in the book, and skips from subject to subject while discussing specific topics. There are many errors in logic and multiple statements that contradict each other. For example on page 105, the author says "Holding the brakes does not shorten the ground roll" and then later in the same paragraph "Having full power when the brakes are released... will reduce the ground roll." For the price, I found this book poorly written and very poorly put together.
This is a fantastic book, with true stories and scenarios. It provides in depth evaluation of situation in which a pilot can avoid, but sometimes does not see it coming. This is a must book for flight instructors and pilots in general. It does not matter if student, rusty, or active pilot. Read it and see it for yourself. Prof. Craig is an experienced aviator, a researcher, an expert in the field, and well known in the aviation industry worldwide.
As a low hour (100) private pilot, currently enrolled in instrument training, this book really opened my eyes. Being able to understand what happened in each of the accidents in this book and to learn how to avoid them is key. Without the experience, for those of us that are in “the killing zone,†we must fall back on our training to save our lives and those of our passengers, and this book will aid in that training. It sparked a lot of inner thought. This book is a spectacular, and enjoyable read! I would highly recommend it to any pilot, from the experienced to inexperienced.
Very insightful book. You can tell the author is very concerned with this subject. Can't wait till I have 351 hours under my belt. I'll breath a little easier.
if you have under 300 hours, READ THIS BOOK. You know how you automatically jump into the "I cant believe i did that" or the "NTSB Accident report" in your favorite aviation magazine? well, this is a FULL BOOK dedicated to this good stuff. Read an accident study, then the author will analyze the problem with you, and give you his input, very good read. very educational.
